Aug. 12 – On this day in Montana
history in 1970 the Flathead Courier reported that a “new monster” had been seen on Flathead Lake in Polson Bay.
Maynard Nixon (not to be confused with artist Maynard Dixon) showed up with a
drawing of the new monster to add to the “strange denizens of the Flathead
deeps.” He said it “was a cross between the original monster and the buffalo.”
Noting there might have been “a bit of hanky-panky goin’ on,” the paper said it
would be referred to “as the Great Flathead Fubbalo.”
