April 15 – On this day in Montana history in 1931 a “rum
runner” was captured after a lengthy cross-border chase between Saskatchewan and
Montana that involved U.S. and Canadian law officers. Mickey McDoolan of Great
Falls was spotted with his load of Canadian “rye” liquor in Montana and fled
back across the border where he was eventually captured. His comment at arrest:
“There goes $700 of soldier gratuity.”
